Dax William Bakken, a 51-year-old Madison, Wisconsin, resident and IRONMAN athlete, died unexpectedly on September 10, 2023, after experiencing a medical emergency during the cycling portion of IRONMAN Wisconsin in Madison. His death was later confirmed by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bakken had been taking part in the 2023 IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon when he encountered medical difficulties while on the bike course. An IRONMAN staff member and an off-duty law-enforcement officer reportedly recognized that he needed assistance and began providing aid before emergency medical personnel arrived.

He was transported to a local hospital for further treatment but later died. The incident brought an unexpected end to what had been an important personal goal for Bakken, who had trained extensively for the demanding endurance competition.

Remembering Dax Bakken

For Bakken and his family, completing the IRONMAN was more than simply another athletic event. It represented a major personal challenge and a goal toward which he had devoted considerable preparation.

His family remembered him as a loving and devoted person whose life extended well beyond athletics. Bakken was survived by his partner, Kristin Keir, their daughter Maeve and his two sons, Finn and Liam.

He was also a U.S. Army veteran who served during Desert Storm. Following his military service, Bakken established a career in the technology field and became a valued member of the team at Whitsell Innovations.

Those who knew him remembered the different parts of his life, from his military service and professional career to his role as a partner and father and his commitment to athletic pursuits.

Medical Emergency During IRONMAN Wisconsin

The medical emergency occurred after Bakken had completed the swimming portion of the triathlon and was well into the cycling segment.

Immediate assistance was provided at the scene before he was taken to a hospital. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently identified Bakken as the athlete who died following the incident.

Initial reports described what happened as a medical event, but they did not establish a definitive medical cause of death. A preliminary autopsy was conducted, with additional findings pending at the time of the initial reporting.

Because the available reports did not establish a confirmed specific medical cause, it would be inappropriate to attribute Bakken’s death to a particular condition without final medical examiner documentation.

Memorial Service

Bakken’s family and friends gathered to remember his life following his death. Legacy records show that visitation was scheduled for September 19, 2023, in Madison, followed by military honors and a memorial service.

His death was a profound loss for his family and for those who knew him through his professional, military and athletic communities.

Dax William Bakken will be remembered as a dedicated athlete who pursued a demanding personal goal, a U.S. Army veteran, a technology professional and, above all, a father and partner whose life meant deeply to the people closest to him.
