Jon Darty Obituary, Death – Northport Man Remembered for His Kindness, Faith, Family and Life of Service
Jonathan “Jon” Hunter Darty, a 48-year-old Northport, Alabama, resident, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026, leaving behind a grieving family, friends and a wide circle of people who knew him through his professional, church and community connections. His death and obituary have been confirmed by Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel and Legacy.
Jon was raised in Carbon Hill, Alabama, where he graduated from Carbon Hill High School in 1996. He later attended the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration in 2001. His professional career included work as a private military contractor, as well as positions with Jim Walter Resources, Warrior Met Coal and, most recently, Longwall Associates.
While his career was an important part of his life, those closest to Jon remembered him most strongly for the relationships he built. He met his wife, Angelia, in 2009, and the couple shared 14 years of marriage. Together, they created a life centered around family, friendship and the many dogs they loved.
Jon had a particularly strong affection for his pets. Luna, Harley, Lola, Zoe and Izzy were among the dogs who became part of his family, while Roxie, Maurie, Coco, Cash and Mia remained cherished memories.
His interests reflected a wide range of passions. As a young man, Jon enjoyed hunting. Later in life, he developed a serious interest in fitness and competed as a powerlifter for several years. He was also a devoted fan of Marvel and DC, followed Alabama football and enjoyed playing golf.
Faith was another important part of Jon’s life. He served at Church of The Highlands’ Greystone Campus in Birmingham and participated in its Prison Ministry, giving his time to work that reflected his commitment to helping others.
Those who knew Jon often spoke about the contrast between his imposing physical presence and his gentle personality. Although he was known for his large and muscular stature, his family described him as a kind and gentle person with a loving heart.
That kindness became one of the defining qualities associated with his memory. Friends and relatives will remember Jon not simply for his accomplishments, but for the way he treated people and the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him.
Jon is survived by his wife, Angelia Darty; stepson Drew McCook; mother Bobbie Sue Darty; aunts May Darty and Vickie Davis; father-in-law Alan Adams and Kathy Adams; sisters-in-law Tammy Jaje and Lisa Gray; nieces and nephews Anna, Olivia, Ella Jaje, Cody, Clay Christian and Esley Gray; along with cousins and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Harry C. Darty; grandparents Earnley Curtis “E.C.” Darty and Grace S. Darty; and mother-in-law Debbie Merrell.
A Celebration of Life for Jon Darty is scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026, at Circlewood Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the memorial service at noon.
His honorary pallbearers include Jeff Hogg, Marc Perry, Terry Wild, Rick Rosinsky, Tracy Hyche, Drew McCook, Curt Dennis Jr., Matt Burgett, Keith “Pops” Williams, members of the Jim Walter Resources Mine Rescue Team and his colleagues at Longwall Associates.
Jon Darty leaves behind a legacy shaped by family, faith, hard work, friendship and kindness. For those who knew him, his memory will remain closely connected to the gentle character that stood behind his strong presence and the many relationships he valued throughout his 48 years.
